SANJEVIC AND CHENG FIND SUCCESS AT ROGERS JUNIOR NATIONALS
Kristina Sanjevic of Edmonton paired with Carol Zhao of Ontario to claim the Girls’ Doubles title at the U18 Rogers Junior National championships in Mississauga, Ontario earlier this week. The pair was forced to regain their focus following a turn in momentum when they gave up the second set 3-6 after serving their opponents, Anastasia Burobina and Charlotte Petrick, both from Ontario, an easy bagel 6-0 in the first set. The victorious duo fought hard to re-establish control late in the third set to emerge on top of the junior doubles event, taking the third set tie-break 10-3.
But the potential to rack up the hardware doesn’t stop there. Both Sanjevic and Zhao are actually eligible as U16 players and will compete in the U16 Rogers Junior National championships starting this Sunday in Repentigny, Quebec.
At the U14 event, Edmonton’s medal hopeful Jena Cheng won her group flight to earn a berth into the final round of eight, where she advanced to the semi-finals before falling to Ontario’s Maria Patrascu 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. In the 3/4 playoff match Cheng lost out again, settling for a final placement of fourth. But this isn’t the end of the road for young Cheng as she too will compete at the U16 event next week.
